J-Term Connects Students with California Business Leaders

1/9/2013

Thirteen senior business majors and two business professors will travel to San Francisco next week as part of their January-term Business Capstone course, where they will be hosted by Rich Clayton (’87), vice president of Oracle’s EPM & BI Global Business Unit. Students will spend the week meeting and conversing with top business leaders from world-class organizations like Oracle, Walmart.com, Redpoint Ventures, CPR, Pro Stainless and Rivendell Bicycle Works.

During the visits, students get a personal site visit and an opportunity for one-on-one discussion. In addition, there will be a half-day roundtable panel discussion with three executives from leading Silicon Valley companies.

Students prepare an individualized research paper prior to each visit and a reflection paper after each visit. At the conclusion of the week of travel, the students will give a formal presentation, making connections between their classroom learning, including a comprehensive three-week business simulation, and their activities during the week.

In addition to the student’s full schedule of business activities, they will attend an alumni gathering at Ameci’s East Cost Pizzeria in San Francisco, where they will have the chance to share pizza and fellowship with their fellow Duhawks.

The students will also find time to experience some of the cultural icons of San Francisco and the surrounding area. Working tours are planned to Alcatraz Island, the Golden Gate Bridge and a luncheon/presentation on the business history of Pebble Beach Golf Company.
