Loras College senior baseball player Travis Misner
(’13) (South Elgin, Ill.) was voted chair of the NCAA Division III Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at last week’s NCAA Convention in Grapevine, Tex.
Misner began his time with the committee in 2011 when he became the Iowa Conference’s (and based on the format, the New England Collegiate Conference’s) representative. He attended his first meeting that summer. In early 2012, Misner was one of two NCAA student-athletes across all divisions selected to attend an amateur athlete forum in Taipei on “University Sport: A Platform for Sustainable Development.”
After filling 10 other spots on the committee, Misner was nominated by a colleague and won the election over one other student-athlete, elevating him to chair of the SAAC in the NCAA’s largest division.
“I’m honored to be given the opportunity,” Misner stated earlier this week. “And the fact I was elected by my peers makes it that much better. I’m humbled.”
Misner will begin his official duties as chair in May. They will include running meetings, some speaking at association-wide events and acting as the primary liaison for any new members to the committee.
“I couldn’t ask for a better executive board (a co-chair and two management council representatives),” said Misner. “Our personalities mesh very well and with 10 new members coming on in July, we need to set the tone. We’re all very excited for this opportunity to leave our mark on the national committee.”
Loras College baseball is just over one week away from the start of their 2013 season. Misner is one of six seniors on this year’s squad. A physical education/K-12 teaching major, he will remain on the committee in his new role following his graduation in May, as is the case for all members who are allowed to carry out their committee appointments one year beyond their eligibility and completion of degrees.
