Loras College had a lot to offer families who came to visit students on campus for Family Weekend (November 1-3). From a magician to bounce houses to a special Mass and Sunday brunch, families were celebrated in a big way.
One celebration was particularly special. Parent of the Year, awarded annually by CAB, was earned by Madelein Diaz Torres, mother of Daniela Rivera
(’14) (Colombia). Even more special was that she was able to travel to Dubuque to accept the award and spend a week with Daniela.
In her nomination, Daniela wrote, “My mom has taught me to trust God no matter the circumstances; to never lose hope because greater things are always yet to come, and to look at obstacles like challenges that can be overcome in prayer.” She continues, “With her dynamism, she has influenced others to grow spiritually, professionally, personally—as parents and as individuals. She is always joyful, never missing the opportunity to make someone’s day.”
Rivera concludes her nomination with “My mom embodies excellence and love in all that she does. She is a great human being who never asks for recognition, but deserves to have the whole world know about her. She never does the bare minimum and has provided me with an example of what an exemplary parent looks like. She seeks to leave a footprint in the lives of those she encounters and especially in mine. My mom not only advises on how to live a fulfilled life, but practices the wisdom she provides others. Through her examples, she has taught me that it is important to do everything with love and integrity so as to put a smile on God’s face.”
Additionally, the recipient of the annual Father Naumann Award was announced over Family Weekend. Bob Schultz
, head cross country coach, topped off an amazing weekend with the announcement that he earned the Father Naumann Award at Sunday brunch.
On Saturday, Schultz earned IIAC Coach of the Year honors based on his team's performance on at IIAC championships, where the cross country team took second place. One of the student-athletes that Bob coaches nominated him for the Father Naumann Award, which is given annually to a Loras College employee who, through their work with students, shows effort above and beyond the call of duty and emulates the ideals and values of Father John Naumann, a professor of psychology and a priest at Loras College from 1975 until his death in 1993. The recipient of this award is someone who values the opportunity to get to know Loras students on a personal basis.
In his nomination of Schultz, John Paul Sevcik
(’16) (Cedar Falls, Iowa) wrote: “Bob never settles for mediocrity, whether it be on the course or in the classroom. I could speak hours on all the encouragement Bob’s given us when we’re running too slow. However, Bob pushes us to always do better in the classroom as well. He realizes that the main reason we’re here is to get an education.” Sevcik continues, “He sees the enormous opportunity he has to help us develop. Sure, I’ve developed a much stronger second half of my 8k thanks to Bob’s training, but that’s not all he does. He’s taught me to involve my faith into what I do.”
