Update: 4/22/2013

Loras is again #1 in the country raising $183,912 for the University of Iowa Children's Hospital & Clinics. Loras College Dance Marathon is the highest per capita fundraising program on the collegiate level and the first college with less than 2,000 students to raise more than $100,000. It's all "for the kids."

Congratulations Duhawks!

Students from Loras College involved in Dance Marathon are busily working around the clock in preparation for the group’s big event on April 20, 2013. Dance Marathon is the largest student-run philanthropic organization on the Loras College campus. The organization supports the Children’s Miracle Network and families at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, both emotionally and financially.

Duhawk Dance Marathon is recognized nationally as the number one per-capita fundraising school, beating out schools such as the University of Iowa, UCLA and University of Florida. This is a title that the organization and Loras have earned the past three years. Last year, dancers raised over $155,000 and this year’s goal is $163,000.

Since the culmination of last year’s event, students have been working hard on the 2013 event. This year’s event will be held from noon to midnight and open to the public, a change from previous years when students danced through the night. This year they will be celebrating during the day in order to bring about new opportunities. All are welcome to attend and join in on this amazing celebration as Duhawk Dance Marathon celebrates the brave kids receiving treatment at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.

Students are working hard to fundraise, recruit, organize event details and, most importantly, continue to be a support for Miracle Families. Over 300 students will be participating in the event this year, and all of them are contributing in one or all of the ways previously mentioned. Dance Marathon provides a great opportunity to generate student leadership and help students develop professionally.

“I have not only become a better person by participating in Dance Marathon, I have become a better leader. Every time someone mentions DM, I smile from ear to ear and think about all of the great memories I have from volunteering for our kiddos. I am looking forward to our event in April where I get to stand on my feet and celebrate for 12 hours, FTK! (For The Kids),” stated Abigail Potts (’13) (Dubuque, Iowa).

Andrew Kelchen (’13) (Cascade, Iowa) added, “There is always something more you can do to better someone else’s life. It’s not about us, it’s about the kids in the hospital and making sure we are making a difference for them. I can think of no better way to be a part of something bigger than myself.”
