Loras College garnered the 11th
spot and Top Tier ranking among Best Midwest Regional Colleges (encompassing 12 states) in the 2014 edition of “Best Colleges” by U.S. News Media Group
. This one of the longest standing publications of its kind, and unlike most other publication rankings, U.S. News & World Report
does not require that institutions complete a survey, invest in advertising or pay fees to be part of the listing.
In part, Loras improved its ranking from 14th
due to high retention rates, excellent placement outcomes, strong graduation rates and continued high academic standards. Most media outlets have focused attention on higher education inputs (e.g., enrollment, sticker price) rather than the aforementioned quality and outcome factors.
The exclusive rankings, which include more than 1,400 schools nationwide, are available at www.usnews.com/colleges
, and will also be published in an upcoming issue of U.S. News & World Report
. Over the past two decades, the U.S. News
College rankings, which group schools based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, has grown to be the most comprehensive research tool for students and parents considering higher education opportunities.
Regional Colleges are defined as institutions that focus almost entirely on the undergraduate experience and offer a range of programs in the liberal arts and in fields such as business, nursing and education. The publication evaluates 367 institutions in the Best Regional Colleges category and divides them into four regions: North, South, Midwest and West.
The 2014 Best Colleges package provides the most thorough examination of how more than 1,400 accredited four-year schools compare on a set of up to 16 widely accepted indicators of excellence. Among the many factors weighed in determining the rankings, the key measures of quality are: peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving.
The “Best Colleges” ranking is of assistance to families as they navigate the difficult decisions involved throughout the college selection process.
