Loras College Receives $49,000 NetVUE Grant

12/3/2013

Loras College has been selected to receive a NetVUE Program Development Grant in the amount of $49,000 for use between January 1, 2014, and January 31, 2016. Loras College is among 36 NetVUE institutions selected in the second annual group of recipients of these awards to deepen the intellectual and theological exploration of vocation among undergraduate students.

The program development grant received by Loras College will be a catalyst to build a strong program of vocation discernment.  The project will research the association of vocation in the theological and philosophical context of the mission and Roman Catholic heritage of Loras, which will lead to professional development for all faculty and staff related to their own vocation journey.  Advisors will receive professional development in appreciative advising, which will lay the groundwork for a special focus on the sophomore experience.  Sophomores will engage in interactive activities where they will benefit from hearing from alumni, particularly young alumni, who will share their own vocation stories.

Bolstering this effort from a curricular standpoint, Loras’ Catholic Identity course will be redesigned to include vocation discernment as part of the coursework.  To support this program across constituencies and disciplines, all students, parents, faculty and staff will be able to access vocation resources through an online page, linked to the campus website.

The Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE) is a nationwide network of colleges and universities formed to enrich the intellectual and theological exploration of vocation among undergraduate students. This initiative is administered by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) with generous support from Lilly Endowment Inc., and members' dues.
The purposes of NetVUE are to:
  • Deepen the understanding of the intellectual and theological dimensions of vocational exploration;
  • Examine the role of vocational exploration in a variety of institutional contexts;
  • Share knowledge, best practices, and reflection on experiences across participating campuses;
  • Develop a network for sustaining an extended program in the intellectual and theological exploration of vocation; and
  • Facilitate the incorporation of additional colleges and universities into this enterprise.
NetVUE Program Development Grants are made possible thanks to a generous grant to CIC from Lilly Endowment Inc.  Campus leaders at NetVUE member institutions have access to a variety of resources, programs, and services. Detailed membership information visit the Council of Independent Colleges / NetVUE.
