Loras College is holding a History Colloquium on Thursday, November 21, 2013, from 7:00 to 8:00pm in the Mary Alexis Room, in the Alumni Campus Center.
At this year's colloquium, Ryan Engelman (’11) will give a presentation entitled “Dennis Mahony, ‘At the Disposal of Tyrants:’
An Analysis of a Newspaper Editor’s Intentions during the Civil War.”
graduated from Loras College with a BA degree in history in 2011. Currently, he is an admission representative at Loras College. He has completed his thesis for a Master's degree at the University of Northern Iowa. Engelman will be talking about Dubuque during the early years of the Civil War and the arrest of a local Democrat, Dennis Mahony. “The presentation explores Mahony’s arrest as editor of the Herald
and simultaneously as the Democratic candidate to Congress as Representative of the Third Congressional District of Iowa. The presentation also examines the social, economic, and political division of Dubuque in the years leading up to the Civil War.
“This presentation mainly deals with the opposition to Lincoln in the North - a topic not often explored when discussing Civil War history. One would hardly know from reading the national press during the Civil War that there was anything but wholehearted support for Lincoln and the war. However, Dubuque contained perhaps the largest antiwar and anti-Lincoln sentiment in the state of Iowa,” Engelman explained.
The History Colloquium is a great opportunity for students and community members to gain knowledge of a historic time period, illustrated through one man’s events. The event is open to any member of the community interested in Civil War history.
