Loras College Wind Ensemble to Host Band from Western Dubuque High School

3/1/2013

On Saturday, March 9, the Loras College Wind Ensemble will present their annual mid-winter concert.  This year’s guest will be the band from Western Dubuque High School under the direction of Mr. Mike Omarzu. This is the fourth year that the College has invited a local band to share the stage with them.

Glenn Pohland, Ph.D., director of instrumental music, said, “This is a great way for us to connect with the local schools and also a great way to have these students experience firsthand what a college music program is all about.”

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the Fieldhouse on the Loras campus and will start with the jazz ensembles from each school playing various selections. The concert bands will follow with each band performing their own literature, and then the bands will combine forces for two final selections, “High School Cadets” by John Philip Sousa and selections from the musical “Wicked.”

An added feature of the concert this year is the return of Mary Clare Chapman ('11), who will be the guest soloist on Grieg’s "Piano Concerto in A".

The public is warmly invited to attend this concert and there is no admission charge.
