The Loras Parkway project, a collaboration between Loras College, Horsfield Materials, Inc., Horsfield Construction, Inc., and IIW, P.C., was the recipient of the 20th annual Excellence in Concrete Award for Streets and Intersections.
The Iowa Ready Mixed Concrete Association described the project as “not a typical street project” and described that it required hand-poured concrete and several different finishing techniques.
Cox Street was purchased by the College from the City of Dubuque with the intention of building an outdoor common area where students, faculty and the Dubuque community can converge. Loras Parkway provides a safe pedestrian and bicycle recreational path as well as a scenic plaza and connector between Dubuque neighborhoods north and south of Loras Boulevard.
When future phases are complete, the parkway will play host to events large and small, and will be available for use by the over 100,000 tourists and visitors the College annually attracts. The central performance plaza will incorporate a large screen and stage area, capable of hosting audiences in excess of 2,000. The parkway will be available to the community for festivals and other special events.
The Excellence in Concrete Awards recognize outstanding projects throughout Iowa and judging criteria includes design, complexity, uniqueness, workmanship and diverse application of ready mixed concrete.
