The Archdiocese of Dubuque will welcome a new archbishop on May 30, 2013. Archbishop-designate Michael O. Jackels has been named by Pope Francis to succeed Archbishop Jerome G. Hanus, O.S.B., S.T.L., as the 12th Bishop and 10th Archbishop extending back to Bishop Mathias Loras.
Loras College, the Dubuque archdiocesan college, is pleased to welcome Archbishop Jackels to his new appointment and to provide hospitality surrounding his Mass of Installation on May 30, 2013, at Nativity Church.
Archbishop Jackels, 59, was born in Rapid City, SD. He holds a doctorate in spirituality from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (The Angelicum) in Rome, and he was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Lincoln on May 30, 1981. He served as the pastor of the University of Nebraska’s Newman Center in Lincoln, assistant director of the diocese’s vocations office and director of Hispanic ministry. He worked in the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith from 1997 to 2005. On January 28, 2005, he was appointed Bishop of Wichita, Kans., and was consecrated a bishop on April 4 of the same year.
The entire Loras College community prayerfully and enthusiastically awaits Archbishop Jackels’ service to us as shepherd. We are grateful to God and to Archbishop Hanus for his tenure of over 18 years as Chancellor of the College, and we pray that God affords him strength and renewed health as he returns to his original Benedictine community, Conception Abbey in Missouri, where he was originally both monk and abbot. Together we will continue to collaborate in spirit and truth, pro Deo et patria.
