The Loras College Neuroscience Program to Host Neuroscience Career Presentation
Posted 2/15/2013

Loras College will be hosting Nicholas Wetjen, M.D., (’96) on Friday, February 22 at 2 p.m. in the Kehl Room in the Alumni Campus Center. Wetjen will be talking about his career path in pediatric neurosurgery, and introducing other pathways to neurosurgery careers, using his residents as examples.

“I will also talk about some of my research and then I'll focus on how the management of a patient in pediatric neurosurgery depends not only on a solid foundation in neuroscience, but all the sciences and the humanities as well,” Wetjen added.

Wetjen's visit will provide students his unique perspective on and experience on success in the medical field.  His presentation will be an excellent opportunity for students planning to enter the medical field who want to gain insight into the work and dedication it takes to succeed.  In addition, Wetjen's visit to campus is a great event for the new Loras College program in Neuroscience.

"Dr. Wetjen has more than a decade of experience at one of the most highly regarded medical institutions in the country.  He has more than 20 peer-reviewed publications, and he has received multiple honors and awards throughout his highly productive career.  Since graduating from Loras, he has been quite busy, and we're thrilled to have him back on campus," said Michael Jarcho, Ph.D., assistant professor of neuroscience.

Wetjen received his bachelor’s degree in Biology from Loras College in 1996. Wetjen continued his studies at the University of Iowa’s Medical School and received his M.D. from the University of Iowa in 2000. After medical school, he worked in the Surgical Neurology Branch of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Md., and Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., in the Neurological Surgery department.

Wetjen currently works at Mayo Clinic where he holds the title of Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Pediatrics.
