$1 Million Loras College Donation Funds the Andrew P. Studdert Endowed Chair in Business Ethics and Crisis Leadership

President Jim Collins (’84) announced today that Loras College has received a $1 million contribution from Andrew and Mary Pat Studdert toward the $75 million Inspiring Lives and Leadership: The Loras Legacy campaign. The donation will fund the Andrew P. Studdert Endowed Chair in Business Ethics and Crisis Leadership.
 
“Andy and Mary Pat have been consistent and generous supporters of Loras. This commitment permits the development of another distinctive and mission-consonant curriculum opportunity. Given society’s greater call for ethical leadership, Loras is now further poised to send more Loras graduates into the world to respond to this important call,” said Collins.
 
 “I look forward to collaborating with Dr. Ciapalo and the Loras community on the practical application of business ethics and crisis leadership,” said Studdert. 
 
Loras College Professor of Philosophy Roman Ciapalo, Ph.D., will be the inaugural endowed chair holder, effective during the 2014-2015 academic year. The Chair will teach within the MBA program and serve to incorporate business ethics and crisis leadership principles throughout the business and liberal arts curriculum.
 
The donation will also fund an Executive in Residence program and at least one annual public lecture. The first executive in residence will be Mr. Studdert, given his nationally recognized acumen in workplace safety and crisis leadership. Together, Studdert and Ciapalo will develop the core principles and components within the overall delivery of the program.
 
“It will be a privilege to collaborate with Andy, himself an exemplary role model of corporate citizenship and leadership, in helping our students and the wider community to gain a better understanding of the nature, value, and necessity of being effective and virtuous leaders in business,” said Ciapalo.
 
A Loras College regent emeritus, Andrew P. Studdert served on the board from 2005 to 2011, and his son, Matt, graduated from Loras College in 2007. Studdert has been the Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and President of NES Rentals Holding, Inc. (NES) since June 2004. Under his leadership, NES has reached more than $400 million in annual sales and was awarded the Safety Champion of the Year award from the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) and Access International magazine.
 
Prior to joining NES Rentals Holding, Inc., Mr. Studdert was Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of UAL Corporation and of its subsidiary, United Airlines, from 1999 to 2002. During his tenure as COO, he led United to its highest ratings in company history for on-time performance and customer service (2002), completed the company's largest cost-reduction effort and guided the airline through the September 11 crisis. He also served as the United Airlines Senior Vice President of Fleet Operations from 1997 to 1999 and was the Chief Information Officer from 1995 to 1997. 
 
Before joining United, Studdert established Andrew Studdert & Associates, a private information technology consultancy, and served as the Executive Vice President of First Interstate Bancorp, the seventh largest U.S. bank holding company at the time.
 
On April 17, 2013, Studdert was honored with the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago Heritage Award. He received the award for exhibiting corporate responsibility to employees, consumers and the public through NES’s culture of safety and preparedness, and for his experience navigating United Airlines through the September 11 national tragedy.
 
In recognition of his professional achievement, his many contributions to Loras, and his outstanding personal attributes, Andrew P. Studdert will receive a prestigious honorary degree at the 175th Loras College commencement ceremony on May 24, 2014.
 
Launched on October 10, 2013, the $75 million Inspiring Lives and Leadership: The Loras Legacy campaign is the largest fundraising campaign in the 175-year history of the college.  In addition to raising funds to support student aid and faculty/staff professional development, the campaign seeks funds to build upon the launch of its MBA program, business analytics initiative and other academic programs. As of May 6, 2014, the campaign has raised nearly $55 million through more than 15,600 donors.
