40 Days of Kindness, a Different View of Lent at Loras College

3/20/2014

In a unique take on Lent, Loras College’s “Du It Forward” committee is challenging the community to “give while you give up” for the third year. The 40 Days of Kindness campaign encourages the Loras community to make a difference around campus with simple acts of kindness during Lent.

A strong passion to positively impact society guided Jina Quade (’05), assistant director of residence life, to start “Du It Forward,” a committee made up of students, staff, and faculty.  “Sometimes we get so caught up in a stressful day or a busy week and we forget that the simplest thing could make the biggest difference. The calendar is just a helpful reminder of 40 simple things that can help make the Loras community even greater than it already is,” she explained.  The timing corresponded perfectly to the Lenten season, in which people historically “give up” something.  The committee embraced the idea of giving back as an alternative.

Some of the actions include sitting with someone who is alone at lunch, writing thank you letters to professors, giving someone a compliment, buying coffee for  a friend, holding the elevator for someone, and smiling at everyone you meet.

The community has positively responded to the campaign. “I have seen posts on twitter and Facebook. I have also seen kindness in action – which is always fun to see! Many faculty and staff members have the calendar hanging in their office and mark off when they have completed the act of kindness for the day,” Quade explained.
