Loras College Hosting Mock Trial Invitational

1/31/2014

Loras College is hosting the National Mock Trial Invitational, the oldest and the largest mock trial tournament in the country, Friday and Saturday, January 31 and February 1.  Teams from all over the United States descend on Dubuque for one last competition before the medal season begins in February.

58 teams will participate, primarily from the Midwest.  Local attorneys and Loras alumni have agreed to participate as judges, including Kevin Costello (’84), an associate judge on the Illinois Twenty-Second Judicial Circuit Court in McHenry County, Illinois, who will judge on Saturday.

Mary Lynn Neuhaus, previous coach of the Loras Mock Trial Team and professor of communication arts , will also judge the tournament and present the Mary Lynn Neuhaus Civility Award to the team that shows the highest level of fair play, professionalism, and friendship as selected by their peers.  This award has been named in her honor in gratitude for her many years of service to the activity of Mock Trial, as well as her example of civility and graciousness to others throughout the years.

Loras will have two teams competing in the competition.  Students competing are: Jessie Donels ('14), Henry Song ('14), Matt Resnick ('15), Julian Valdes ('15), Cody Arnold ('16), Blake Gibney ('16), Emily Decker ('17), Elaine Wasylko ('16), Amanda Sharkey (’16), Dallas Knapp ('17), Brandy Rubin ('17), Sara Statz ('17), Luis Sanchez ('16) and Lucas Tully ('17).

All events are open to the public, and spectators are asked to report to the Alumni Campus Center for directions to courtrooms that can accommodate them.  Videography and photography must be approved in advance. More information can be found at loras.edu/mocktrial
