The Dr. Scholl Foundation recently awarded Loras College a $20,000 grant to fund Dr. Scholl Internship Away Scholarships. The foundation recognizes the growing need and opportunity for students to gain work experience through internships. At Loras, students leave campus for semester-long internships in Dubuque, across the U.S., and around the world. For college students today, the ability to apply classroom learning in professional settings is important for their success and a great benefit to the organizations at which they intern and to future employers.
The Dr. Scholl scholarship helps students who cannot afford to participate in internships away from home or campus. Since 2006, 53 students have received a Dr. Scholl Internship Away Scholarship, and have worked at organizations such as the Bayswater Family Center in London, England, Disney in Orlando, Fla., and Hostal Mexico in Santiago De Compostela, Spain. Many of the internships also allow students to perform community service.
Students who receive the Dr. Scholl scholarship are selected through an application process. They must demonstrate financial need for the award and have already been awarded an internship. These awards help with the cost of housing, food and transportation. Without the generous support of the Dr. Scholl Foundation, many Loras students would have to decline these unique internship opportunities.
