Loras College Receives $200,000 Scholarship Donation from David Holmberg

7/18/2014

President Jim Collins (’84) announced today that Loras College recently received a $200,000 cash donation from David Holmberg (’72) toward the Inspiring Lives and Leadership Campaign goal of $75 million.  The donation establishes the David J. Holmberg Science Scholarship, assisting students to pursue their STEM-based (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education at the college.

“Loras has an amazing history of success in the health sciences. The recent ABET accreditation garnered by our engineering program and launch of our STEM education program significantly build upon Loras’ strength in the sciences. Mr. Holmberg’s generosity will only enhance our ability to attract talented students to the STEM disciplines,” said Collins.

The scholarship will be designated by the Loras College Office of Financial Planning and available to students who demonstrate significant financial need, with a preference given to female students. The scholarship will be renewable up to four years, as long as the student recipients maintain satisfactory academic progress toward their degree.

"My parents, as well as my extended family, instilled in me an appreciation of family, community, ethical living and our Catholic faith, encouraging me to pursue my dreams with passion and to never forget the importance of giving back,” stated Holmberg. “These early lessons were strongly reinforced by a dedicated Loras College faculty that expected 100 percent from me as they guided my collegian liberal arts journey, preparing me well for graduate school and later life."

After graduating from Loras in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in biology, Holmberg received a master's degree in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a certified industrial hygienist, certified safety professional and certified hazardous materials manager, Holmberg has worked as the assistant director of Laboratory Services at Clayton Environmental Consultants, environmental director at Acme Steel Company/Acme Packaging Corporation and is currently the environmental health and safety director at the Calumet Area Industrial Commission.

Launched on October 10, 2013, the $75 million Inspiring Lives and Leadership: The Loras Legacy campaign is the largest fundraising campaign in the 175-year history of the college.  In addition to raising funds to support student aid and faculty/staff professional development, the campaign seeks funds to build upon the launch of its MBA program, business analytics initiative and other academic programs. As of June 30, 2014, the campaign has raised $55.6 million.
