How do coaches make calls during games? Are they using the right tools? Explore these questions with Loras College from 6-9 p.m., Wednesday, January 8, during the January term course Sport Business. Dan Conway, Ph.D., director of the Loras College MBA program in business analytics
, will host a Sports Analytics session, open to the public, which will explore the role of analytics in coaching decisions.
The interactive presentation, held in the Marie Graber Ballroom in the Alumni Campus Center at Loras College, will challenge participants to act as coach in various football, baseball and basketball scenarios, using given information to make calls. Conway will follow up each scenario with an explanation of what the “right” call should have been, given the analysis of the situation.
“This event will give participants an introduction to analytics and people will walk away with a basic understanding of analytics and various ways it can be used to make decisions. While these scenarios are specifically related to coaching, it’s really interesting to see how far-reaching analytics is in every field,” explained Matt Garrett, Ph.D., chair and professor of sports studies
at Loras College.
The presentation is free to attend and no RSVP is needed.
