Former Duhawks Shining in the National Spotlight

Fresno State’s Thomas Boeh (‘81) and Duke’s Kevin White both collect Athletic Directors of the Year Award

With the 2013-14 academic year brought to a close, two of Loras’ finest have seen their tireless efforts rewarded on the national stage. Fresno State’s Thomas Boeh (’81) was selected as one of four National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year while Sports Business Journal recognized Duke Athletic Director Kevin White as Athletic Director of the Year.
Boeh, who got his start in sports information at Loras College in the 80’s, has traveled all over the country during his career having spent time at the University of Illinois, University of Maine, Northwestern University, Ohio University, and currently Fresno State University.
While at Fresno State, Boeh has led the Bulldogs through the transition of leaving the Western Athletic Conference to the Mountain West, and has seen his programs flourish. In 2008, Fresno State made history as the only No. 4 seed to advance to the College World Series. After making it to Omaha, the Bulldogs went 5-2 and claimed the title with a 6-1 victory over Georgia.
“Tom has represented and generously supported the college throughout his career. All at Loras join me in extending our congratulations to and pride in Tom’s well deserved recognition,” Loras President Jim Collins (’84) said.
Seven days following Boeh’s award, Kevin White, who began his athletic administration career at Loras College, was presented with the Athletic Director of the Year Award by the Sports Business Journal.
White led the Blue Devils to a successful academic year both on the competition field and off. White has been a leading figure in the “Duke Forward” campaign which has a goal of raising $3 billion. Part of the funds raised in the campaign will help renovate iconic facilities such as Cameron Indoor Stadium, as well as allow Duke to grow its athletic department with the addition of softball in 2018.
While at Loras, White was the driving force behind the National Catholic Basketball Tournament which brought teams from all over the country to Dubuque for 19 years. After serving as the athletic director for three years, White became vice president of student development and dean of students. Two years following his previous promotion, White became the vice president of advancement, a position in which he oversaw the $15 million capital campaign as well as the $1.2 million annual fund.
Before Duke, White spent time at the University of Maine, Tulane University, Arizona State University and most recently Notre Dame. To his credit, 23 current or former directors of athletics have been mentored by White, including Boeh.
“Kevin is one of the finest leaders I’ve known,” Collins said. “Through his years of dedicated service to intercollegiate athletics and student-athletes across the country, there are few candidates more deserving of this award than him.”
Combining for over 80 years of experience in collegiate athletics, Boeh and White have been true hallmarks and proud representatives of Loras College. On behalf of the entire Loras community, we are proud of what these two individuals have accomplished and how they represent Loras College in the grandest of ways on the national stage. Their consistent, ongoing support is manifested through their financial support to Loras and in their internship sponsorship for Loras students.
