Loras adds Mens Volleyball

2/4/2014

Loras College Athletics Director Bob Quinn announced on Monday January, 20th the athletic department will be adding men’s volleyball for the college’s 23rd intercollegiate sport. The inaugural season will begin in spring 2015 and the team will compete as an independent while competing in the Athletic and Wellness center on campus.

"Men’s volleyball is an exciting and fast-paced brand of power volleyball and is quickly growing across the country as a result of the United States’ demonstrated Olympic success. Loras College is excited to make this announcement and the new program will offer us one more opportunity to extend the classroom as part of the top-notched liberal arts education offered here," said Quinn.

Loras College also considered the sport of men’s and women’s hockey and men’s lacrosse. Many factors went into the decision to add men’s volleyball for Athletic Director Bob Quinn and the college. The resource startup was a factor that played into the decision. The college already has much of the necessary startup equipment that includes nets and volleyballs from funding the women’s team. Loras College also has excellent facilities that also allow the sport to come into existence; the AWC and the Graber Center are two areas the team will use. Recruiting wise, the states of Wisconsin and Illinois have funded and hosted the sport for 10 plus years along with the states of Iowa and Minnesota have areas that provide men’s volleyball.

Men’s volleyball is the newest and youngest championship on the NCAA Division III scene. This season will be the third year the NCAA will host a championship game for the sport. Throughout the country many colleges are adding men’s volleyball because of the growing popularity of the sport.

Loras College is currently conducting a search for the first men’s volleyball coach in the history of the institution.
