Campaign Gift Launches Public Opinion Survey Center

A new program made possible by a generous, anonymous $50,000 gift to the Inspiring Lives and Leadership:  The Loras Legacy campaign has already garnered national media attention. Loras College recently launched a unique resource to the College’s many experiential learning opportunities:  The Loras College Public Opinion Survey Center. The center will conduct, analyze and report the results of periodic professional polls focused on current events, social and economic issues, politics and more.  Capitalizing on its location in the politically vital and vibrant state of Iowa, the Iowa Presidential Caucuses will be the cornerstone of the center’s work.
“This program allows students to engage with professionals in public opinion research.  With Iowa such a focus of the political world, this is a great opportunity for Loras.  It is interesting and practical for our students, and is already making a contribution to the public dialogue in Iowa and the nation,” remarked President Jim Collins (’84).

The Loras College Poll will be conducted several times each year. Associate Professor of Politics Christopher Budzisz, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor of Mathematics Matt Rissler, Ph.D., are the faculty advisors of the poll, working with students on methodology, developing poll questions, analyzing and interpreting data and assisting with sharing the final results with local, regional and national media.
“The Loras College Poll demonstrates the commitment of the institution and its generous alumni to providing students with a first-rate education.  You just do not find these opportunities elsewhere," said Budzisz.
The first round of polls were conducted in early April regarding the U.S. Senate Republican primary, the 2016 Iowa Republican presidential caucus, the Iowa Congressional primaries and the Republican gubernatorial primary. Foundation Honors Alumnus’ Service with Scholarship Gift; Alumnus Designates Loras College

In recognition of William “Bill” (’64) Lynch’s outstanding board service, the Pella Corporation Board of Directors, in conjunction with the Pella Rolscreen Foundation, awarded him with a $50,000 scholarship to fund the educational institution of his choice. Lynch has generously designated the William T. Lynch/Pella Corporation Scholarship to Loras College.

For the next 10 years, $2,500 will be awarded in aid to deserving Loras students and $2,500 will be placed into the endowment. After the 10-year period, the scholarship will become fully endowed, and will award up to 5% of its interest value annually for student assistance.
After graduating from Loras and earning his MBA from the University of Iowa, Bill began his career at Leo Burnett Advertising as a trainee and media buyer. Over the years he moved through the ranks to become president and CEO of both Leo Burnett Company Inc. and Leo Burnett Worldwide Inc. After a successful 31 years in advertising with one of the largest agencies in the world, Bill retired in 1997 to assist numerous business, civic and charitable organizations in the Chicago area including The Big Shoulders Fund.
Bill received the Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Achievements and Contributions made to Loras College in 1992 and served on the Loras Board of Regents from 1993-2003. He chaired the Belief Unfolding campaign, and funded the Lynch Student Life Office and a portion of the Lynch McCarthy Apartment Complex on campus. Bill lives with his wife, Kathleen, in Prospect Heights, Ill. Two of Bill’s daughters, Kelly and Maureen, graduated from Loras; Kelly in 1988 and Maureen in 1989.
Lynch is a steering committee member of the $75 million Inspiring Lives and Leadership: The Loras Legacy campaign. The Lynch/Pella scholarship helps move Loras closer to the campaign goal.
