LCTV Among the Top Collegiate Newscasts in the U.S.

5/6/2014

Loras College is home to one of the top 12 collegiate newscasts in the nation, according to the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). The organization recognized LCTV News, produced by Mareah Adolphs (’15), as the Best All-Around Television Newscast from Region 7 (Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska) during their 2013 Mark of Excellence Awards on April 25, 2014.

As a first-place winner, Loras will move on to the national Mark of Excellence competition against winners from the 12 SPJ regions. The top 12 includes the University of Maryland, University of Florida, Michigan State University, Northwestern University and Brigham Young University, among others.

“It’s quite an honor for our students to be competing at the national level,” said Media Studies Professor Craig Schaefer (‘89). “But when you work hard and tell stories that make a difference, great things happen.”

The national recognition comes on the heels of several regional awards for the program. In March, Loras Media Studies students received three Eric Sevareid Awards from the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association (MBJA) and two Student Production Awards from the Upper Midwest Emmy® Chapter. Competing against schools from Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska, Loras received the following honors:

Eric Sevareid 1st Place Award for Student Market TV Sportscast/Program
SportsZONE – produced by Zach Altfillisch (’14)

Eric Sevareid Award of Merit for Student Market TV Sports Play-by-Play
Live Sports – produced by Sam Lozada (’14)

Eric Sevareid Award of Merit for Student Market TV Documentary/Special
Student Production Award for Long Form: Non-fiction

“Pretty in Pink, Covered in Dirt” – produced by Makaila Haase (’16) and Juanita Bustamante Escobar (’16)

Student Production Award for Long Form: Fiction
“Annexation,” – produced by Jake Roth (’14), Frankie Mosca (’14), and Connor Stickney (’14)

“I think the thing that impresses me the most about that list of awards is the range of content they’re for.  Loras is receiving national and regional recognition for news, sports, play-by-play, film and documentary,” said Kate Berning (’09), coordinator of media operations. “It’s inspiring to work with students who are so passionate that they just can’t seem to stop creating great work.”
