2/4/2014

Loras College is hosting George Weigel, biographer to Pope John Paul II, for a free lecture and book signing at 7:00 p.m., February 25, 2014 in the Alumni Campus Center’s Marie Graber Ballroom. During the lecture, Weigel will discuss his latest books “Evangelical Catholicism: Deep Reform in the 21st Century Church” and “Roman Pilgrimage: The Station Churches.”

Prior to the lecture and book signing, everyone is welcome to participate in the regular daily 5:15 p.m. Mass in Christ the King Chapel.

Considered one of the greatest observers of the global Catholic Church today, Weigel is a distinguished senior fellow of the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) and currently holds its William E. Simon Chair in Catholic Studies. From 1989 to 1996, Weigel was the president of EPPC and led an extensive inter-faith? program of research and publication on domestic and foreign policy issues. Beginning June, 1996, Weigel was given unprecedented access to Pope John Paul II and in 1999 “Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II,” was published. The authoritative biography became a New York Times Best Seller and has since been translated into twelve languages.

“George Weigel has been not afraid to bring the light of faith and reason to bear upon economic and political questions that surface in all sorts of diverse societies.  He does not always say what people want to hear, but he does want people to know that regardless of political stripes, we are all called to communion in Christ,” said Loras College Dean of Spiritual Life Father William Joensen, Ph.D.

In addition to the aforesaid titles, Weigel is the author or editor of 18 other books. His op-ed columns, essays and reviews appear in major opinion journals and newspapers across the U.S.; his weekly column "The Catholic Difference" syndicated to sixty newspapers. Weigel is a Vatican analyst for NBC News and is a frequent television and radio guest.

This event is free and open to the public.
