The Loras Biology program offers majors in biology and biological research. The Biology major is designed for students seeking a broad background in the field do not wish to pursue a research orientation. The biological research major is designed for students pursuing research experience after graduation. In addition, an optional specialization in biology for secondary teaching is also offered.

The experience available at Loras is unlike that of any other private institution in the Midwest. Our DNA Lab’s sequencer puts recombinant DNA technology directly in the hands of students for use in research projects. Many of our courses emphasize field-sampling techniques and local conservation issues. And our J-Term classes take students to Florida, Texas and Costa Rica.

Our curriculum will help you prepare for a specific field of interest but will also give you the chance to learn about many aspects of the natural world from biomolecules, genes and cells to plant and animal ecology and human physiology. Almost all our courses incorporate laboratory experience. These labs are student-centered, focused around asking questions and using the scientific method to answer them.
