Welcome, Workshops, and Waterparks 
 
Second semester is off to a great start and the Student Life Office is busy planning educational and social events for all students. Programs and events are specifically planned each semester by the Year Experience student coordinators to ensure the social and academic success of their fellow Duhawks. Emily Nelson, the First Year Experience Coordinator, is currently working to create a smooth transition for new students and their families through the Orientation and Launch into Loras programs. She also is planning events such as a Welcome Back Fiesta and a bowling competition for the current first year students and their MOI classes. Megan Redmond and Andrea Enda, the Sophomore Year Experience Coordinators, are planning to host a variety of academically enriching events including workshops focused on resumes, interview skills, internships and personal finances. They will also host a free Movie Night, and, in conjunction with the other Year Experiences, a trip to the Kalahari Waterpark and a Fighting Saints Hockey Game. The main event planned for the juniors this semester by Junior Year Experience Coordinator Megan Kelchen is an Etiquette Dinner which will help to prepare students for the professional world. Finally, Senior Year Experience Coordinator Joel Pohland has planned an exciting line up of social and professional development programs including a Graduation Fair, Senior Night Out, a Senior Cruise on the Mississippi River and the annual Senior Dinner. Encourage your student to get involved in these great events so that they can further their success at Loras!



 
Upcoming Billing Timeline
 
February 15   Payment 3 of 4 due for Spring
March 15        Final Spring payment due. All balances should be paid in full. Students
                        with a balance greater than $500 will NOT be permitted to register for the
                        Fall 2014 term.
April 1-14        Fall 2014 Registration begins
May 1              Summer Billing. All summer billing charges, tuition and housing, are due in full by June 15.
July 1              Fall 2014 Billing
 
Please take the necessary steps to make sure your student does not receive a Registration Hold on their account due to their balance.



 
Registration Hold Policy
 
Spring Registration – For the fall to spring registration, the College does not generally require a fully paid bill, however, if no payment has been made to that date or a significant outstanding balance exists, the College reserves the right to hold the student’s registration.

Fall Registration – For the spring to fall registration, all students must have a balance of $500 or less in order to register from one academic year to the next academic year.  If the student does not have the minimum balance by April 15th of the year prior to registration, ALL registrations will be CANCELED, including classes, housing, meal plan and any/all other college registrations.
 
If you have questions regarding the status of your student’s account balance, please log on to their account online and view their account activity.





First Semester Service Trips

McKee, Kentucky: The longest standing trip in Loras’ Service Trip history, this trip is focused on helping the local residents at St. Paul’s Parish. Students work on housing improvements, visit with the elderly and learn about the Appalachian people. Students also organize a Thanksgiving dinner and entertainment for residents of the area.

Chapel Hill, North Carolina: Students participate in the UNC Newman Center volunteer program at Chapel Hill.  During the week that they are there, they will work in teams around the area primarily in an urban immersion experience.  This will include working on home building and repair, volunteering for groups fighting homelessness and poverty, and learning about the local culture.



New Orleans, Louisiana: Working with the St. Bernard Project, continuing their work to help rebuild houses from Hurricane Katrina as well as help with the damages from Hurricane Isaac, these efforts help not only with rebuilding homes, but also help rebuilding the lives of the citizens of the area.



Chicago, Illinois (Not pictured): The Brother David Darst Center offers an urban immersion experience focused on justice, peace, spirituality, and education. While there, students will work at soup kitchens and shelters in the city. The team will also discuss social and economic changes as well as urban poverty and homelessness.
 





Morton, Mississippi
: Morton, Mississippi is a predominantly African American and immigrant, rural, Southern community which experiences high unemployment and school drop-out rates. Working with the sisters there, the team will assist with outreach in local high schools, after-school tutoring programs, home repair throughout the community, presence to the elderly, as well as learn about the history and culture of the area.










St. Pat’s Auction

For over 56 years, Loras College Campus Ministry has sponsored the St. Pat’s Auction which supports service trips by Loras students. This is a very fun, long standing tradition here at Loras. Last year included music, both live and silent auctions, and a gift card raffle. The St. Pat’s Auction will be held on March 14, 2014 on the Loras campus and we would love to have you there! Registration will begin at 5:30PM in the Marie Graber Ballroom in the Alumni Campus Center.

Successful Students Study (at the Library!)
 
Research has shown that studying in the library is significant because students who do so:

  • gain more effective study skills
  • are more engaged in learning
  • have higher GPAs
  • are 1.54 times more likely to persist with their college education.
 
According to Geoffrey T. Freeman: “Students at all levels of academic proficiency need and want to go to the library now more than ever before. Going to the library adds value to their lives and offers many of the tools and experiences that will give them the competitive edge they will need to succeed after their formal education is completed.”
 
Students might think that because so many of the library’s resources are online, they don’t need to physically visit the library, but the library is so much more than books and databases.  As Freeman notes, when students enter the library they become part of a larger community that endows them with a greater sense of self and a higher purpose.  They look to experience a sense of inspiration that they can obtain by studying in the library.

 Reminders from the Office of Financial Planning
 
The 2014-2015 FAFSA is now available!  It is time to renew aid and remind you that our priority deadline is April 15th.  All students must annually complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov  in order to participate in federal and state aid programs and renew need based Loras aid. 

Take advantage of the IRS Data Retrieval service to make your FAFSA filing easier.  The IRS Data Retrieval Tool allows students and parents to access the IRS tax return information needed to complete the FAFSA and transfer the data directly into the FAFSA.
 
Once you have filed 2013 Federal income taxes, you may use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to update your FAFSA.  This can be completed by both student and parent if both have filed Federal income taxes.   If you have already completed the 2014-2015 FAFSA using estimated income and tax information, we recommend that once your taxes are filed that you return to the www.fafsa.ed.gov website and use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to transfer your data from the IRS.
 
If you do not use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to provide tax information, you will be required to obtain an official tax return transcript from the IRS if you are selected for verification.  This year tax transcripts can be viewed and printed immediately by logging into the IRS website, www.irs.gov/individuals/Get-Transcript.  Or you can select to receive the transcript by mail at the same site.
 
Students will receive their renewal financial award packages online.  Our office will send a notice to the student’s Loras email account when the package is available to them.  Paper award packages are available upon request only.
 



Housing Sign-up is Just Around the Corner
 
Returning students will sign up for housing using our new online system March 23-27, 2014.  Students will receive their assigned housing sign up time and housing sign up information in their campus mailbox the first week in March.  This information will include details about available housing options, housing costs for 2014-15, and the sign up schedule.  If your student has questions about the housing sign up process, please have him or her contact an Area Coordinator, who would be happy to answer questions about the housing sign up process.  Since this is our first year using our new system, we will be providing many opportunities in the month of March for students to come to programs to learn about the new online process. Please encourage them to attend! Please remind your students that Loras has a three year residency requirement, and that students are not permitted to live off campus before their senior year without permission for exemption from the college.  Students are granted permission for exemption only in truly extraordinary circumstances.




Spring Break/Easter Closing
 
The Residence Halls will be closing on Friday, April 11th at 9pm.  All residents will be expected to leave the halls at that time, unless they have permission to stay late.  Be sure to have your student take with them anything they may need, including all necessary medications. Students who need to stay for athletics or travel reasons will need to fill out a stay late form no later than Friday, April 4th. Permission to stay late will be granted only for sufficient reasons. Cost to stay in the residence halls during break is $85 a week (or any part of). The Residence Halls will reopen at 12:00 noon on Monday, April 21th for the remainder of the Spring Semester.

Loras College Campus Dining provides quality, nutritious food in a relaxed atmosphere. We serve the Loras community by providing food and beverage needs in our Cafe, PUB, Duhawk Market, POD, Concessions and Catering department.

During 2013, we added the Papa John’s pizza brand to the PUB.  We also updated the décor and based on feedback received, we added “Greens to Go”, a salad concept.

In the Café we added our new Healthy for Life comprehensive health and wellness program, including a wellness center and literature display featuring information on understanding serving sizes, building a healthy plate, and making healthy choices.

As a valued partner, we are dedicated to increasing our customers’ satisfaction. During Fall 2013 we implemented “Your Voice Counts”. This is an advanced research methodology designed to generate ongoing customer satisfaction feedback. Share your feedback at campusdiningvoice.com

Du-What…. Duhawk!

The Loras College pride can be heard by students chanting this at games and alumni during Homecoming.  On Thursday, May 22, 2014 you will not only hear the pride that students and alumni share, but will see the purple and gold spread across the country and abroad, when we kick off our second annual Duhawk Day.
 
On this day of celebration, we are asking our alumni, parents and students to wear our school colors and consider supporting Loras with a gift.  In honor of our 175th we are setting a goal to get 1,075 people to give a donation.  It does not matter the dollar amount, what matters most is that you are part of this special day. Duhawk Day is planned on the same day as the Class of 2014 hosts the traditional senior dinner, allowing us to officially welcome them into the alumni family.

Winter Blues
 
Long, cloudy, cold winters can bring on the winter blues. In addition, the shorter days and decreased hours of sunlight can affect everyone.  During darkness the brain produces more melatonin than during the daylight hours.  Melatonin acts like a tranquilizer on the body causing some people to experience changes in their mood, energy level and ability to concentrate.  Some people may experience a temporary mild depression.
 
Strategies to combat the winter blues:
 
Maximize your time in natural sunlight. 
  • Raise the blinds and let the light shine in.
  • Exercise regularly by a window or outdoors.
  • Loras College students may use the Fitness Center for free.
  • Try massage or yoga to strengthen the mind/body connection.
  • Maintain a healthy diet, include fruits and vegetables.
  • Lift your spirits by spending time with others.          
  • Sit by a window during the day.
  • Take short walks outside.                                                      
  • Develop a regular sleep pattern.
  • Smile.
  • Spring is just around the corner (we hope).


Duhawks Du Miracles – Dance Marathon Set for April 26

April 26, 2014 will mark the 9th Anniversary for Duhawk Dance Marathon, and those involved are working to make this its biggest year yet. Duhawk DM, which is part of the Children’s Miracle Network, is the largest student-run organization on campus and raises funds all year for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. All proceeds go directly to the kids receiving treatment from the hospital to try to create a little normalcy for them and their families during their stay.

Loras has received national recognition for its fundraising efforts. Sheila Baldwin, assistant vice president of development for University of Iowa Children’s Hospital says, “Loras College students have made an indelible mark on our pediatric patients and their families. In eight years, Loras College Dance Marathon has raised over $770,000 for UI Children’s Hospital, making it the number one-ranked Dance Marathon in the entire country for fundraising per student enrolled. Dollars raised by the Duhawks have funded many important programs at our children’s hospital, including our “Room of Magic” movie theater, CarePages online service, and continental breakfast for parents who are staying at their child’s side during treatment and recovery.”

Duhawk DM positively affects thousands of kids’ lives in the state of Iowa, including Loras alumni. Krista (Walsh) Weitz,(’95) a Dance Marathon miracle mom, said “Since our daughter, Anna, was diagnosed with a rare cancer, I’ve been trying to intelligently tell people just how important Dance Marathon is to our family. I’ve yet to find the right words to express what DM has done for our family and thousands of other families in Iowa. DM is the reason it was okay to go to the hospital where lots of unpleasant things happened to my daughter because she knew all the wonderful things Dance Marathon provided. Many times when Anna was having a bad day, she received a card, a Carepages message or video from a Loras DM’er. She knew Duhawk DM cared about her and was there to support her. I guess what I am trying to say is DM truly lives up to FTK (For the Kids) every day for kids at University of Iowa Children’s Hospital!”

Duhawk DM raised an incredible $183, 912 this past year and has set its goal even higher this year at $200,000. It would not only be a momentous goal to reach, but it would also make Loras the first college with fewer than 2,000 students to raise that amount of money. On April 26, participants will be on their feet from 12PM-12AM celebrating their yearlong efforts with all of the families supported by Duhawk DM. Better than an App!
 
Technology seems to evolve faster than we can keep up.  As our children will tell us, that new phone that was state of the art only a few months ago is now, according to their analyses, relegated to the ash heap of ancient technology and in desperate need of an upgrade. Some of these new technologies don’t just improve their access to social media and entertainment, however. They can provide students with enhanced opportunities to learn and transform their educational experience.
 
One such software is Read and Write Gold.  Loras has installed this software on students’ laptops so it’s universally available and easy to access. It’s a program that takes electronic texts and provides an audio component to the text.  In other words, it audibly “reads” the text back to the student.  Students struggling with textbooks or academic articles can listen to the text while concurrently viewing the text on their computer screen.  Research has indicated that when we interact with information in different formats – audibly and visually, for example, we tend to internalize and retrieve it better.  So, next time you see them with their earbuds and staring intently at the screen, they might not be on Facebook after all, but rather reading and listening to a textbook. And as every parent can agree, that’s evolutionary!
