Michael J. Valder
Mike Valder of Phoenix received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Loras in 1962 where he was active in social justice programs and served as President of both the Iowa Regional and National Federation of Catholic College Students.
He received his JD degree from Georgetown University and after practicing and teaching in Washington, D.C., moved to Phoenix in 1973 and established his expertise representing plaintiffs in medical malpractice cases, until his retirement from law practice in 2006. Throughout his legal career and since then and he has continued his social justice work with several non-profit organizations, including public interest law and campaign finance reform groups.
Mike and his wife Janet have three children: Jeffrey Valder, Matthew Valder (’86) and Alice Valder-Curran. Jeffrey's daughter Katherine Valder (’14) is a current student at Loras College.
Mike's brother Bob (Loras '60) was a civil rights organizer in the South. After his death in 1981, Mike and Janet established the Robert Valder Social Justice Scholarship program, which has supported summer internships for over 50 Loras students since 1987. He and Janet have also partnered with the AGUILA Youth Leadership Institute and Loras College to provide college access opportunities to Phoenix-area Latino youth, which has brought nearly 50 students to visit the Loras College campus.
