of Loras College faculty hold a

“I love my field of research, but I wouldn’t be happy just learning exciting new things about the cell for the rest of my life if I couldn’t also share that excitement and knowledge with students and mentor them as they launch their professional lives.”

Dr. Cooper’s passion for her work and for students is reflective of the commitment of Loras faculty, and is evident in her approach to teaching and the respect she receives from her students.

“I think Loras is a great community where I can teach our majors several times throughout their college careers and see them progress and mature. That connection with students is extremely fulfilling.”

Dr. Cooper is dedicated to bringing interest and excitement about biology to the classroom, and she envisions a myriad of opportunities outside the classroom for students in the future.

“I strive to incorporate real-world applications of class material like weekly ‘Disease Friday’ in immunology class, where we learn about how the biology we’re studying relates to some terrible and horrendous disease. Believe it or not, this is actually a favorite and highly anticipated day for students!”

Additional resources could expose and educate students about even more aspects of biology and science. Increasing exposure to cutting-edge research and advances in science makes students even better prepared for their post-college careers or graduate school.

Cooper believes that funding additional scholarships and endowing programs would provide students with enhanced opportunities to participate in important co-curricular activities like independent research projects with professors.

Faculty like Kate Cooper look at current students and envision what they might become, particularly if provided expanded opportunities.

“Our students have had great success, but I wonder what they could do if additional programs and opportunities were available to them.”
