What is the Legacy Symposium?
The Legacy Symposium is an all day celebration of academic and creative work at Loras College, featuring presentations of student research, service presentations, and creative performance.
Who can present at the Symposium?
All current Loras students and faculty.
What sorts of projects are you looking for?
Capstone projects, case study presentations, creative readings, creative work, cluster projects, research papers, honors projects, service project presentations.
What kinds of presentations are acceptable?
Oral presentations or posters; as individuals or a group.
Can I present creative work?
Yes, you can present creative writing, visual art, or a musical composition or performance.
Who is the audience?
The audience is the Loras College community; in other words, a general academic community and not just members of your major or department. You will want to be ready to put your work into a broader context.
What if I have a conflict during my presentation time?
All classes are canceled for that day so that students and faculty can attend the symposium. If you are presenting in more than one project, make sure to mark that on the abstract submission form and we will do our best to accommodate you.
What is an abstract and how do I write it?
An abstract is a brief summary (short paragraph) that summarizes for a general audience your project and argument.
Purdue Owl Writing Lab defines it this way: An Abstract is “a concise summary of the key points of your research…Your abstract should contain at least your research topic, research questions, participants, methods, results, data analysis, and conclusions. You may also include possible implications of your research and future work you see connected with your findings. Your abstract should be a single paragraph double-spaced. Questions related to poster presentations:
Do I have to bring my own poster board and tacks?
Yes, although there is a possibility that you can use a large-scale printer to make a poster. If you are interested in this option, please let your faculty advisor know.
Do I need to be next to my poster during the presentation hour?
Yes. The idea is that you will be able to discuss your research with visitors during your session.
How long does the poster need to be up?
For the assigned session. More details will be given after you are assigned a particular presentation time/space.
