Loras College Recyclemania
Recyclemania is a friendly competition among colleges and universities that promotes waste reduction and recycling activities over a 10 week period. The overall objective of the contest is to heighten awareness in waste management and reduction within the college community. (see http://www.recyclemaniacs.org for more information)
This is the second year that Loras College has participated in the contest. For the first year we competed with other schools and universities in the recycling competition. However, starting this year we are competing in the waste reduction competition and weighing both recycling and trash generated on campus. Last year, we were placed 99th out of 180 colleges and universities.
Everyone Can Help
Make it a habit to recycle anything possible, instead of tossing into the trash can
Turn off lights, and equipment like televisions, laptops and stereos when you're not using them. That little red standby light means they're still using power - and that means a contribution to global warming.
Turn off the tap when brushing the teeth and avoid long showers.
Walk to your class rather than driving- reduce your carbon footprints.
Clean the lint traps after you use the dryer.
Avoid the non biodegradable shopping bags
Whenever you can – Think reuse instead of disposable. Whenever you can re-use plastic instead of tossing, you are making a difference.
Re-use plastic bags - consider cloth bags
Re-use water bottles - or get a BPA one of your own
Use Rechargeable batteries
Use your own coffee cup when getting coffee in the morning - refills usually cost less and reduces the plastic coffee cups in our landfills :)
