Loras Students to Share Haiti Experience

11/6/2012

On Nov. 8 , 2012 at 7pm in the Alumni Campus Center Marie Graber Ballroom, Loras College students, faculty and staff will be host to “Haiti’s Earthquake-- 3 Years Later”, an informal discussion about the use of charitable funds for Haiti, problems that have developed, and an organization that is “doing it right.” The group who traveled to Haiti in January 2012 are Dr. John Eby, Jon Denham (‘02), Jacob Urbelis (’14), Hannah Way (’15), Becky Derr (’13), Mary Agnoli (’15), and Jess Withey (’13).

The group of students who traveled to Haiti is passionate about positive changes there and explored the issue of international aid to the country.  “Millions of dollars were donated to help assist Haiti in recovering from its earthquake in 2010, but it is now clear that not all of that was spent as they imagined,” says Dr. Eby, history professor at Loras.

“I realized when I visited Haiti that, although millions of Americans have tried to help that country after the earthquake by donating to organizations, the money from donations was not always used as we intended.  Three years after that cataclysm, Haitians are still living in desperate conditions.  We want to inform people about the situation there and provide clues about how to donate effectively in response to their needs,” says Derr .

The group traveled to Haiti as part of the Haitian Project.  It consisted of five students, one faculty member and one staff member at Loras College who spent the week of January 22-28 in Croix des Bouquet, Haiti. The project involved working at Louverture Cleary School, a coeducational Catholic boarding school called which nurtures academically talented and motivated students from the poorest Haitian families to help maximize their potential and enable them to work toward building a Haiti where justice and peace thrive.  Their goal is to educate leaders who will then go out to better their own communities.
