On October 24, 2013, the foursome of Kathryn Belanger
(’14) (St. Charles, Ill.), Katie Gonzales
(’14) (Chicago, Ill.), Megan Gregg
(’14) (Hinckley, Ill.), and Adam Schwoebel
(’15) (O’Fallon, Ill.) - with help from Jimmy Collins
(’15) (Dubuque, Iowa) and Shane Williams
(’16) (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) - won the national championship at the Sport Marketing Association in New Mexico, for their efforts in designing a student incentive program for men's basketball attendance at University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
“Placing first in the SMA case study competition was really rewarding. Our team put in a lot of long nights in the library researching and working on the case. For me this was my third competition, so being able to win as a senior was very special,” said Belanger.
Matt Garrett, Ph.D.,
coordinator of the Sport Management program explained, "I am so proud of this group who has brought home the program's fourth championship in as many years, once again securing our spot as the premier sport management case study team in the country. They finished second last year in Orlando and left with the goal of winning the championship this year in New Mexico. I have never seen a group work harder and the impression the teams left has opened many doors for them in their future."
This is the 10th consecutive tournament where Loras College has had a top-three finish and it is the fourth tournament that Loras has taken home the championship title. The team plans to travel to Arizona in March 2014 for a new conference focused on Baseball Analytics to secure another victory for Loras College.
