Loras College “Take Back the Night” scheduled for Thursday, April 25

Loras College OVE+R (Overcoming Violence and Empowering Positive Relationships) group is sponsoring Take Back the Night, Thursday April 25, 2013 on the Academic Resource Center lawn at 7 pm.
The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of sexual assault and empower people to create communities free of violence.  The event will begin on the lawn (rain site is Loras College Fieldhouse) and move into the Marie Graber Ballroom, located inside the Alumni Campus Center.  Planned speakers and events include: opening statements and a prayer written by Cindy Nielsen, a Dubuque community member; a speech from a Riverview Center representative; skits about sexual violence; and a Speak Out session for Survivors, allies, and anyone else who would like to talk. Finally the event will end with lighting candles and walking around the campus, ‘Taking Back The Night’.
OVE+R president Brittany Seyllar (’13) (Gilbert, S.C.) explains, “I attended the first Take Back the Night my first year at Loras.  I went expecting to hear some good speakers.  I heard people I knew, my friends, sharing their own personal stories or stories of loved ones and how the trauma of sexual assault has had a lasting in their lives.  I heard someone speak-out that night and share a story that I could relate to.  Because of that night, I have since come to terms with my own experience, and my life has been changed.  Now, I am President of OVE+R and I advocate for sexual assault awareness and support of survivors any chance I can get.”

O.V.E.+ R. stands for Overcoming Violence and Empowering Positive Relationships. It is a Loras College group formed by students who wanted to put an end to sexual assault in the campus community. The group’s three goals with this event are to increase awareness of sexual violence, educate people to positively impact the behaviors of instigators of violence, and provide support for those affected by sexual assault.
