Loras College to Host 2013 Iowa Conference Track and Field Championships

5/7/2013

SummerYouthProgramsLoras College will host the 2013 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Track and Field Championships May 9-11 at the Rock Bowl Stadium. The event returns to the Rock Bowl for the first time since 2005. That year, the Loras men’s team claimed the title and the women’s team finished in second place.

Tickets for the event are $6 for adults and $3 for students (K thru college). Loras College students, faculty and staff are admitted free with their IDs.

Fans can watch the event live beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Friday via Loras’ GameCentral stream. Fans can also follow the championships on Twitter, @IIAC_Track and @LorasAthletics.

The Duhawks currently have five student-athletes atop the IIAC performance lists. On the men’s side, Josh Goerdt (’14) (Dyersville, Iowa) owns the fastest time in the 400 with a 49.23. Austin Steil (’13) (Cedar Rapids, Iowa),  who won the steeplechase at the Loras open in late April, owns the top time in that event with a 9:40.64. Michael Meersman (’14) (Chicago, Ill.) has the top javelin throw with a 183’, 9” effort. All three are the defending champions in their respective events. On the women’s side, Katie Langmeier (’14) (Cuba City, Wis.) and Rachel Kolbeck ('13) (Richfield, Wis.) will also try to defend their titles. Langmeier owns this season’s top high jump at 5’, 5.75”. Kolbeck’s best pole vault is 11’, 1.75”.

Loras student-athletes hold three Iowa Conference records. Brian Kult (’90) threw the league’s best discus distance in 1990 and Andy Stoecken (’07), who went on to win the national championship in the high jump in 2005, still owns that mark. Dana Klemm (’07), another national champion, set the mark for the IIAC’s best shot put on the women’s side in 2007.

“We are excited to host the event at the Rock Bowl and on the Loras College campus,” said Bob Schultz, head men’s and women’s coach. “We have done a great job across the board when hosting championships in other sports, and this will be no different. We’re all looking forward to it!”
