Anyone associated with Loras College knows service is integral to the entire Loras community. Service occurs in Loras’ academic classes, within its co-curricular organizations and our week-long service trips. This fall, Loras students are once again volunteering in lots of different ways.
For example, Loras College students just completed Dubuque’s annual Make A Difference Day where over 70 Loras students from several different student organizations volunteered at Dubuque residents’ homes, focusing on light duty inside and outside the home, weatherizing activities and socializing with the homeowners.
Student organizations are also busy serving the greater Dubuque community. One example is the Loras College eDUcation Club. eDUcation Club has spent hours volunteering with a local non-profit, ARK Advocates, on their Respite Nights. These nights include games, music and arts for children with special needs, ages 3-12.
Lastly, Loras students will soon be embarking on a week-long service trip to McKee, KY during Thanksgiving break. Students give up time with their families to visit, learn and engross themselves in the Appalachian culture, working on housing improvements, visiting with the elderly and organizing a Thanksgiving dinner for area residents. McKee, KY is the longest-standing Loras College service trip, celebrating its 25th anniversary, and we are excited for many more years of partnership!
Tell us how you are serving your community! In celebration of our 175th anniversary, we are collecting stories and tallying the hours we know that Duhawks are putting in every day to better this world. Share yours at alumni.loras.edu/shareyourservice
