Loras College Readies for 9th Dance Marathon on April 26

Loras College is built on a strong foundation of service and 400 Loras students are gearing up to participate in their biggest philanthropy event of the year—Dance Marathon. Duhawk Dance Marathon, which is associated with the Children’s Miracle Network, is the largest student-run organization on campus and raises funds year round for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.
On Saturday, April 26, 2014, Duhawks will stand together from 12:00 p.m. -12:00 a.m. to celebrate their year-long efforts to fundraise, recruit, organize event details and, most importantly, continue to be a support for Miracle Families. The event is open to the public and all are welcome to join the participants as they strive for miracles.
Those involved have put in a collective average of 21,000 hours of service the past year to the organization and are hoping to achieve a new record-setting total of $200,000. This would not only be a momentous goal to reach, but it would also make Loras the first college with fewer than 2,000 students to raise this significant amount. Last year, Duhawk Dance Marathon raised $183, 912 for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, and will commit $100,000 of this year’s total to complete a pledge of $500,000 in support of the hospital’s building project.  In recognition for the pledged support, the playroom of the surgical center at the new facility will be named after Loras College Dance Marathon.
“Dance Marathon isn’t just an organization to join on campus,” says Emily Wozniak (’14) (North Riverside, Ill.). “I have realized through my service not only the difference it makes in a family’s life, but how much passion I have for such a great cause.”
Kevin Baynes (’14) (Grayslake, Ill.) adds, “Dance Marathon has given me more than just a co-curricular; it has given me something to be proud of. Every day I know the work I do is making a difference in the life of someone who needs me, and focusing on that makes everything 100% worthwhile.”
Loras College’s Dance Marathon has been recognized nationally as the number one per- capita fundraising school since 2009, beating out schools such as the University of Iowa, UCLA and University of Florida.
