Solar Still Project
This project involved the design, construction, and testing of a solar still used for water purification. Such stills are used in arid regions to purify brackish water for drinking and cooking. Solar energy vaporizes brackish water at the bottom of the still; the purified vapor then condenses on the sloped, transparent cover and runs down the cover to be collected. The image below shows students testing two stills. Students modeled the heat transfer in the stills using the Matlab software. The project was part of Physics 332, Fluids & Thermodynamics, taught by Professor Swift in the fall of 1999.
