PHYSICS SECONDARY EDUCATION PROGRAM
Physics and Engineering
Physics and Engineering exists within the framework of most liberal arts colleges. We are dedicated to providing access to fundamental concepts of physics and engineering for all students as well as providing access to specialized knowledge for majors and minors for their specific career goals. Physics and Engineering at Loras also serves as a source of expertise for the local community where moral and ethical implications of engineering and scientific knowledge are conveyed as they are taught to our students. Faculty are committed to teaching, research and service as well as achieving the highest level of professional competence.
Loras offers degree programs in both engineering and physics, one of only 3 programs at small colleges in the state of Iowa to do so. There are two Bachelor of Science (B.S.) four-year degrees and an Applied Physics minor. Loras also offers a degree intended for students desiring a State of Iowa endorsement for teaching physics at the secondary level. In addition to core courses, Teacher Education requirements must also be met. We recommend that you consult with an admissions counselor if you are considering pursuing this degree.
The Physics and Engineering curriculum provides students with several possible paths of study:
a major in electromechanical engineering
an individualized major in engineering studies (recent examples have included engineering management, biomedical engineering and applied physics)
a typical pre-engineering curriculum, a major in physics for secondary teaching
a minor in applied physics
