Loras College is home to the Alpha Alpha Upsilon chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha. As the national political science honor society, the organization’s purpose is “to promote worthwhile curricular and extracurricular activities related to political science,” and “to stimulate scholarship and intelligent interest in political science.” Induction into the organization is a sign of a student’s superior academic achievement in the study of politics. The Loras chapter, founded in 2003, is the 589th chapter nationwide.
The national organization provides numerous scholarships to students of politics, sponsors academic research and scholarship competitions, provides funding for local chapter activities, and hosts several engagements at political science conferences nationwide. The official website for the organization is http://www.apsanet.org/~psa/
At the local level, the Loras College chapter is poised to host events of interests (e.g., panels, guest lectures, etc.) for the college community and the Dubuque area. These events are to further the goals of the national organization as outlined above.
Students who are interested in joining the society must meet the selection criteria. These standards are as follows: 3.2 overall gpa, at least a “B” average in politics courses, and at least 4 classes (12 credits) of coursework in politics (with at least 6 credits from “upper division” courses).
