Experiential Learning


The Sport Management program networks with sports business professionals across the nation through regional and national conferences, and through course-related academic trips to regional metropolitan areas.

Case Study Competitions
Sport management students participate in two case study competitions each year.  The case studies require students to work on a sport management-related topic and write an essay and develop a presentation to solve the problem associated with the topic.  For example, the 2011 Sport Marketing Association Case Study competition was focused on developing a marketing program for the University of Houston athletic department.  Students researched the Houston market and developed a plan that focused on the use of a local band in a marketing campaign. 

Loras College students have earned more national accolades in case study competitions than any other school in the nation.  These honors include:

Sport Management Internships
Sport management students are required to complete a semester-long internship during their junior or senior year.  These internships provide the students with valuable experience and connections for careers after graduation.  Examples of these internships include:

               
  • United States Olympic Committee
  • Chicago Bears
  • Chicago Blackhawks
  • Cal Ripken Baseball Academy
  • United Fight Club Headquarters
  • Arizona State University Athletics

Sport Management Courses
The sport management students are given the opportunity in the sport management courses to learn through a variety of class projects.  The Sales and Sponsorship course works on several "real life" projects.  Last year, the students worked with the Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL Hockey) to improve ticket sales.  Additionally, the course gave the students the opportunity to develop a sponsorship proposal for a Major League Soccer team.  The opportunity to put the skills they learn in the classroom to work immediately allows for students to be better prepared for their career upon graduation.


Other Related Experiences:
Fall 2012 - Full Day Trip to Chicago
Students visited the Chicagoland area during Fall Free Days.  Students had the opportunity to visit with representatives and tour the facilities of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Fire (MLS). This was a great way to meet Loras College alumni and make connections for future internships/careers.

Winter 2013 - St. Louis Cardinal Winter Experience
  • Students served as volunteer workers at the Cardinal Winter Warm-Up.  The students worked in set-up, registration, and other vital roles.  This experience allows fans to interact with players while raising money for charity.   The students had the opportunity to meet Cardinals management while learning how a big league event is run.

Spring 2013 - Jo Jo White Experience
  • Loras College students had the opportunity to work with a Boston Celtics great.  After meeting with Mr. White this past fall, Loras College students are developing a marketing campaign for his charitable organization.  This is a great way to work on a 'real world' situation and also network with an NBA great. 
Spring 2013 - Illinois State University Sport Management Symposium
  •  Loras College students had the opportunity to travel to Normal, Illinois for a symposium.  Students were able to hear from many of the leaders within the profession.  Following one of the presentations, students were able to visit with the Orlando Magic's Senior Vice President, Pat Williams (pictured below).
