In 1918, the worldwide influenza pandemic engulfed the small town of Titonka, Iowa. Dedicated community physician Dr. Pierre Sartor treated more than 1,100 patients–and by his reckoning, lost only five. Dr. Sartor’s handwritten memoir of that searing experience, “Thrills of my life,” was discovered decades later by his granddaughter, Mary Beth Sartor Obermeyer, in a lockbox filled with family documents.
