Frequently Asked Questions

What are the requirements to enroll in this CFP® Certification Education program?

Students who want to enroll in any CFP® exam education course offered by Dalton Education must have earned or be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program from a regionally accredited college or university.

How long does it take to complete the program?

The Virtual Classroom format has designated start dates and is designed to be completed in ten months, although students will have access to the materials for fifteen months. Access can be extended beyond that for an additional fee.

Students doing the self-paced format may start classes at any time and will have access to the program materials for fifteen months.

For any student in either the Virtual Classroom or self-paced format wishing to complete the classes faster (nine months), Dalton has resources and a plan students can follow to make that happen.

Students must complete all six courses with passing grades in order to fulfill the CFP® Certification Education requirement. You must complete your curriculum within five years of passing your first course to ensure you are mastering relevant material.

Once a financial services professional has been authorized to add the CFP® designation to their title, they are also required to recertify with 30 hours of continuing education credit every two years, including three hours of ethics CE credit.

Who should take the CFP Certification Education Program?

This program is a good fit for: new financial professionals looking to build a solid career foundation, mid-career professionals looking to advance in their current position, career changers looking to enter the financial planning profession, financial advisors looking to enhance their earning potential, or professionals committed to maximizing client satisfaction.

What sets Loras apart?

The Loras College community has always been defined by strong relationships and a proactive, service mindset. Through our personalized approach, all students enrolled in our CFP® Certification Education program will receive one-on-one, individualized coaching and mentoring from Loras faculty members who have written CFP® exam questions, textbooks, and hold their CFP® designation. Students will receive a phone call every four weeks, along with notes of encouragement, congratulations, and guidance throughout their coursework. Ensuring strong, caring relationships is what the Duhawk community is all about, and we look forward to continuing that tradition within this program.

What type of technology will I need to take the classes?

It is recommended that students have an operating system Windows 7 or higher or Mac OS 10.6 or higher. Students must be able to run, install, and configure programs and be able to store and retrieve documents and files on their computer. The latest version of Adobe Flash Player is also recommended for viewing the live classes. If you are unsure if you have appropriate permissions to save files to your computer, please contact your system administrator.

Can I take the classes on my own time in a self-paced format?

Yes. Students who do not wish to do the Virtual Classroom (synchronous) format may instead take all 6 courses, or just a few courses, in a self-paced (asynchronous) format. Self-paced students may start the program at any time and will have access to the program materials for fifteen months, including whiteboard recordings for the more difficult topics (approximately 30 total hours through the entire program); but the live and recorded lectures that Virtual Classroom students have access to are not available to the self-paced students. Support from Loras’ Program Director will still be provided to self-paced students.

How is testing administered in the courses?

Generally, two exams are given for each course. Students will take an online midterm and final exam for each course. The midterm is 40% of the final grade and the final exam is 60%. Students must achieve a 70% for each course in order to receive a passing grade.

What if I fail an exam or drop out?

If students fail an exam, they will have an opportunity to take a makeup exam. The makeup exams are different versions testing the same content. Students failing a course with a course grade of 60-69 after exhausting all exam attempts can opt to do extra credit, which is available through an education advisor. Students failing a course with a grade of 59 or below will be required to repeat the course during a four-week sit out period.

If a student chooses to not continue in the program after initial enrollment, a full refund will be issued up to 5 days after the first day of the start of the program. Students who drop out on day 6 of the program or anytime thereafter will receive no refund and will be financially responsible for the full cost of the program.
