
Coach Bob Bierie (’65) Lecture Series
The Coach Bob Bierie (’65) Lecture Series is designed to honor the legacy of Coach Bierie by bringing distinguished speakers to Loras College who will address topics at the intersection of health care, sports, and leadership. Through these lectures, students, alumni, and the broader community will gain knowledge, insight, inspiration, and practical tools to lead and practice with integrity, perseverance, and vision; both on and off the field.
Dr. Peter J.L. Jebson (’86) joined us on Thursday, March 5 as the Inaugural speaker. During his lecture, he shared his experience as a Clinician and Health Care Executive, Motivational Leader, and Innovator. In his talk, entitled “The Role of the Orthopedic Consultant in Caring for Elite Intercollegiate and Professional Athletes”, Dr. Jebson discussed the personal, professional, clinical, and ethical challenges of the orthopedic consultant in managing elite athletes (professional, collegiate) with hand/wrist injuries. MORE ABOUT DR. JEBSON
Dr. Jebson is a nationally renowned orthopedic surgeon specializing in hand, wrist, elbow, and microsurgery. He has published over 100 peer reviewed articles in prominent medical journals. He has authored and/or edited 4 books, authored 45 book chapters, given over 240 national presentations, and served as Course Chairman at several international meetings for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), and American Association for Hand Surgery (AAHS). Dr. Jebson is a renowned leader, clinician, surgeon, and teacher and has received several awards including; “Guide to America’s Top Surgeons”,“Best Doctors” (top 5% of clinicians worldwide), “The Leading Physicians of the World”, ‘America’s Top Surgeons”, “Metro Detroit’s Top Doctors”, “Patients’ Choice Award”, “Guide to America’s Top Orthopedists”, and the “2019 American Association for Hand Surgery Lean and Green Award” for an innovative office based hand surgery program that reduces cost, delivers value for patients and payers, and lowers the environmental impact of medical waste. He was nominated for ‘Clinician of the Year’ at the University of Michigan Health System. He was a consultant for the University of Michigan Athletic program and USA Hockey. Dr Jebson is a former consultant to the National Hockey League Players Association, National Basketball Players Association (NBA), Grand Rapids Football Club, and the Intercollegiate Athletic Programs of Grand Valley State, Ferris State, and Davenport Universities. He is a reviewer or editor for several prestigious medical journals including the Journal of Hand Surgery.
Dr Jebson is the former Vice President and Chief of the Orthopedic Health Clinical Service Line at Spectrum Health System and the Department of Orthopedics, Spectrum Health Medical Group in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr Jebson founded the Jebson Healthcare Consulting Group and is currently an Associate Medical Director for Carelon Healthcare Benefits Management which is part of Elevance Health (formerly Anthem Health). Dr Jebson is also the Chief Officer for Jebson Consulting LLC which partners with a diverse group of companies on healthcare related projects, prior authorizations, post-procedure denials and appeals, and revenue cycle challenges and process improvement.
