DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College Dance Marathon has been awarded honorable mention by Generous U, the Sillerman Center for the Advancement of Philanthropy’s nationwide contest that celebrates and rewards efforts to raise awareness of and involvement in philanthropy on college campuses.

“Loras College Dance Marathon is very proud to be chosen as an Honorable Mention for the Generous U grant,” said organization co-president Andrea Enda, of Lombard, Illinois. “It means so much that our organization has been recognized for its sustainability and a philanthropy that leads to lives of service and professionalism. Dance Marathon is proud of all the work we do and will continue to do in the future.”

Student groups, clubs and organizations compete for the $10,000 Sillerman Prize and the Generous U title by demonstrating success in engaging a substantial number of peers in charitable giving, increasing philanthropic awareness and a culture of giving on campus, nurturing the lifelong habit of charitable giving and developing a model that can be adopted on other campuses.

In order to be considered, each applicant must submit a proposal, executive summary and video that explains their story. Only activities that promote philanthropy through monetary giving are eligible for the prize. This year, each application went through four phases of judging. From there, Generous U selected a grand prize winner, two runners-up and three honorable mentions. These selections were based on an applicant’s demonstrated ability to support philanthropy and social justice movements on campus and to encourage involvement in philanthropy among their peers.

Since 2009, the Loras Dance Marathon has been first in the nation in per-capita fundraising. In 2015, more than 300 students participated in the event and helped raise more than $229,000 for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. The 2016 Loras College Dance Marathon is Saturday, April 23 in the Alumni Campus Center Marie Graber Ballroom.
