Sarah Mueller (’19) will have two of her works republished in plain china, the national undergraduate literary journal associated with Virginia Commonwealth University.

plain china will be reprinting Mueller’s creative nonfiction piece “Not Above the Knee” and the fiction work “Sticky Air.”

“Sarah’s writing has an impressive range of style and tone, reflected in the two works chosen by plain china,” Kevin Koch (’81), professor of English, said. “She can explore the darker moments of human experience, as in her fictional work, ‘Sticky Air,’ and she can make you laugh uproariously, as in her nonfiction work, ‘Not Above the Knee.’ But even her comedic work, in the end, conveys a serious message to the reader.”

Mueller is just the latest Loras student writer to have her work featured in plain china. Over the two years, the publication has republished works by six other Loras poets.

“Having students republished in plain china along with other student publications and over twenty-five years’ worth of wins and placements in the Delta Epsilon Sigma National Undergraduate Writing Competition has really put Loras College on the map for developing fine writers,” Koch said.

Mueller was awarded the Rechenmacher Award for Creativity by Loras College during the 2019-2020 academic year.

plain china is an online anthology of the best undergraduate writing and the first of its kind on a national level. It is a publication curated by and for undergraduate students that seeks out and publishes the best poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction written by undergraduates.

Both of Mueller’s works were published in the latest issue of Loras’ The Limestone Review. For a copy of the current issue (or recent back issues) of The Limestone Review, contact Dr. Koch at kevin.koch@loras.edu.
