DUBUQUE, Iowa – Anna Peterson(’20) earned the championship trophy at the Peacemaker Mediation tournament, capping off a successful Loras Mock Trial team performance in Fairfield, Iowa on October 26. Loras finished eighth out of fourteen teams.

Peterson was the top mediator out of forty two, winning the final championship round versus Principia, University of Dubuque, and Drake Law.

“Anna is an ‘all-rounder’ who has strong talents in trial advocacy as the captain of our Mock Trial team, excellent argument skills as a member of the Moot Court team, and the ability to settle disputes peacefully through Mediation,” Deone Merkel, instructor of communication arts and coach of the Loras Mock Trial team, said.

In the previous round, Peterson teamed with Josie Edel (’23) to finish eighth out of twenty-eight client/advocate teams. Peterson and Edel are on all three of the Pre-Law co-curricular opportunities that Loras offers.

Peterson, Edel and team captain Jake Heelein (’22) represented Loras throughout the tournament.

Merkel sees the results as a part of more substantial success. “The team has enjoyed a resurgence in the last two years, and under the leadership of Jake, we expect strong results next season as well. Next year we plan to make it to the National tournament level.”

Loras College is the only undergraduate school in Iowa that offers all three activities at the undergraduate level. Moot Court and Mediation typically are only offered at the Law School level. Additionally, Loras is one of the few schools nationwide that offer all three undergraduate opportunities.
